TOEFL Overview and Structure

Thousands of colleges, universities and other multinational organizations accept TOEFL as sole standard of evaluating English language competency. TOEFL test scores are acceptable
all around the world. One advantage of TOEFL is its friendly structure which allows test takers to answer and respond in more flexible way as speaking session is not live and student’s speech is recorded for post evaluation. These recordings are evaluated by more than three (3) examiners who keep into consideration the factors like students geographical location, accent and hesitation.
1. Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT™)
This is internet based test and is offered twice or thrice in a year.
2. Paper-based Test (TOEFL PBT)
Paper based TOEFL is only offered in those areas where internet based TOEFL is not available. This is usually offered 5 or 6 times in a year.
Structure
TOEFL test has four sections to evaluate you English language proficiency. These sections comprise listening, reading, writing and speaking. Total time allowed is four and half hours.
Listening
In this section, you listen recorded discussions, lectures and other speeches and answer 34-50 questions which are taken from the same recordings. You would be given more than one hour for this section.
Speaking
In about 20 minutes, you are asked to give personal opinions on six different topics. These topics are of general interest or related to routine life tasks.
Reading
In this section, you have to read different passages and answer given questions. Time allowed for this section is 60 – 90 minutes.
Writing
With in a time of 50 minutes, you are asked to write two (2) essays giving your opinions. Topics are chosen on random basis.
